ECSE

Harrison Elementary School has two Early Childhood Special Education(ECSE) preschool classes. These class is designed to help prepare special needs preschoolers for the kindergarten program. A screening is conducted and a child study meeting is held to see if further evaluation is necessary to identify the child as having a possible developmental delay. This Developmental Delay identification is measured by appropriate diagnostic instruments and procedures, in one or more of the following areas, physical development, cognitive development, communication development, social or emotional development, or adaptive development.

To qualify for services, the delay must not be a primary result of cultural factors, environmental or economic disadvantage, or limited English proficiency. The presence of one or more documented characteristics of the delay has an adverse effect on educational performance and makes it necessary for the child to have specially designed instruction to make progress in the general educational activities for this age group.

Children can be referred for a screening by contacting the Harrison school office or the Student Services office at the School Board Office ((804)733-2700).
