About Our School

David A. Harrison Elementary was built in 1967 to replace the outdated Bessie Mason School and Disputanta Elementary School. It was built on a 10 acre site donated by the family of David A. Harrison. He had served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1914-1916. During his time there, he secured passage of a charter creating Hopewell. Mr. Harrison practiced law in Prince George County and was the first Commonwealth's Attorney in Hopewell from 1916 to 1917. He served as Mayor of Hopewell from 1918-1920.

Originally, Harrison Elementary School was a 28 room single-story brick structure, built to be as maintenance free as possible and to accommodate 650 students, first through fifth grade. in 1970, the population of Harrison Elementary was changed to include only first through third grade. In 1974, a six-room addition was built to include kindergarten students as well. The population was changed in 1992 to include kindergarten through second grade and again in 1997 to include the Pre-K program. In 2002, construction began at Harrison to renovate the facility and add new classrooms, a library, and a gymnasium. This project was the result of a reconfiguration of the county's elementary schools to kindergarten through fifth grade. The project was completed in the fall of 2003. Harrison currently has the capacity to accommodate 750 students.

Principal's Welcome
I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to Harrison Elementary School, home of the Harrison Bears. I am honored and proud to be Harrison’s principal. Our teachers, administrators, and support staff are committed to making sure each day is filled with experiences that promote success in the future, while providing the best instructional practices. Together, with your partnership, our goal is for each student to leave Harrison as a well-rounded individual, able to communicate effectively, master basic academic skills, have an appreciation for the arts, and is of good character. Please read and discuss with your child the Harrison student handbook, and the Prince George Code of Conduct. They are excellent resources during the year. We look forward to working with you this year, and making 2023-2024 the best year yet.

Also, in order to promote student safety and preserve the time we have with our students, I want to remind you of a few expectations. Please do not drop off students prior to 8:35a.m. Supervision is not available unless you have made arrangements with Champions. If your child will be absent, please send a note either prior to the absence or when your child returns. Please do not pick-up your child prior to your assigned dismissal time unless it is an emergency or you have an appointment scheduled. Please use the appropriate parent loop for afternoon dismissal, and be sure the dashboard pass is visible. If you feel a parent/teacher conference is necessary, please call to schedule the meeting before school, after school, or during the teacher’s planning time. By following these guidelines we can insure all students are learning in a safe environment and instructional time is maximized.

Please support Harrison by participating in our fundraising opportunities.  You can register with Prince George Electric Round Up for Education to support Harrison. This year we will be sponsoring a fall and spring fundraising event. Additional information will be sent home throughout the year.

Thank you for supporting Harrison, and helping to make each day a valuable, enriching, and safe learning experience for all of our Harrison friends.

Christopher Scruggs, Principal
