David A. Harrison Elementary School welcomed a few dozen parents, family members, and community members to participate in the school's Career Day event, a tradition for young elementary-age students, on Friday, March 17, 2023.
During the event, the volunteers toured the school, visited classrooms and gave students backgrounds on their professions, what goes into their work, and what they enjoy about their jobs. It also allowed students to learn about careers ranging from medical and financial services to mechanical and trades.
Even at an elementary level, Career Day events help students discover what career paths are available to them as they continue to grow as learners and be prepared for their transition to secondary instruction and beyond, including post-secondary education at college, university or trade school, military service, or entry straight into the workforce.
Additionally, Career Day events allow students to learn about careers they may have had a curiosity about from those working there, and in some cases, from a familiar face, like a relative or parents of a classmate. Harrison Elementary's event saw students ask a host of questions as the engaging presentations by the community members helped spark the imagination and inquisitive nature of their attentive audiences.
Finally, events like Career Day further strengthen Harrison Elementary's connection with the community. A close-knit family of Harrison Bears, the families and community partners of Harrison Elementary help make every event the campus hosts successful, benefiting the children of Prince George County.
We extend a special thank you to everyone who participated; our Harrison Bears thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
